Treatment You Can Expect:

At Michigan Spine & Joint Center, we combine chiropractic care and physical therapy to offer effective treatment.

Our primary method in chiropractic treatments is spinal manipulation, which effectively restores joint mobility and enhances range of motion. We use various techniques, including manual and instrument-assisted methods (like spinal traction), muscle release techniques, soft tissue therapy, and the Graston® Technique to address muscle imbalances and promote healing.

Our physical therapy treatments include therapeutic exercises, stretching, and balance training, helping patients regain strength, flexibility, and stability. Our physical therapists work in a fully equipped wing of our clinic in collaboration with our chiropractors for a holistic approach.

We believe in a comprehensive approach to patient care, combining different techniques to address your unique needs. Our team develops a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific condition.

Frequently Asked Questions (Chiropractic):

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care is a health care profession based on interactions of the spine and nervous system, as well as the surrounding muscles. It also focuses on lifestyle modifications such as exercise and diet to maintain optimal health.

Are chiropractors doctors?

Yes. Doctors of Chiropractic (also known as Chiropractors or Chiropractic Physicians). In fact, educational requirements for chiropractors are among the most stringent of any health care profession.

What types of pain do chiropractors treat?

Chiropractors are known for their expertise in caring for patients with neck, middle, low back pain. They also treat sports injuries and other disorders involving muscles, ligaments and joints. The benefits of chiropractic care go beyond this and extend into general health as our core body structure affects overall function and health.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific, controlled force in a precise direction that is applied to a spinal joint not moving properly or “locked up.” The purpose of this natural and safe procedure is to correct structural alignment and eliminate interference in the nervous system. For the patient, this means improved spinal function, reduction in pain, and an overall improvement in health and wellness.

Do adjustments hurt?

Chiropractic manipulation is a highly controlled procedure that rarely causes discomfort because minimal force and gentle pressure are used. In fact, most patients feel relief immediately following treatment. Any reported soreness after an initial adjustment has been described as similar to that associated with starting a new exercise program. Drinking plenty of water, using an ice pack, and engaging in light stretching after your first visit can help ease any discomfort and promote healing.

Are adjustments safe?

Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of most neck, middle and low back problems. Spinal adjustments are extremely safe when performed by a licensed chiropractor.

Why do adjustments sometimes make a popping sound?

The noises you hear resembling popping sounds are your joints forming tiny pockets of air.

Are all patients adjusted the same way?

Each patient’s care is unique and therefore customized to meet their specific condition and needs. Your chiropractor will modify adjustments based on your size, weight, age and health condition.

Will a chiropractic adjustment completely remove neck, middle and low back pain?

For many, neck, middle and low back pain can become chronic if left untreated. Chiropractic care has been shown to ease and even eliminate pain for many patients.

Can I see a chiropractor if I am pregnant?

Many pregnant women find that chiropractic adjustments improve the pregnancy experience and make delivery easier. Adjustments are adapted to accommodate the stage of pregnancy and the unique needs of each patient.

Is back pain common?

More than 80 percent of people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. In fact, it is one of the most reported reasons people miss work and is the second most frequent reason patients visit the doctor.

Can I learn to adjust myself?

Chiropractors are trained to adjust in a very specific location and direction. As a result, it is virtually impossible to adjust oneself correctly and accurately.

Does insurance cover chiropractic care?

Absolutely! We take most insurance plans and would be happy to assist you in determining your coverage for chiropractic care. Please contact your insurance provider to verify your coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses. If you need help, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office for assistance.

Do I have to see a chiropractor for the rest of my life once I start going?

No, you do not have to see a chiropractor for the rest of your life once you start going. However, the frequency and duration of chiropractic care will depend on your individual needs and goals. Research shows that chiropractic care can be effective for a variety of conditions, but the length of treatment will vary depending on the severity and complexity of your condition. It is recommended to work with your chiropractor to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions (Physical Therapy):

What is physical therapy care?

Physical therapy is a health care profession that focuses on the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of various musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and cardiopulmonary conditions. It employs a range of therapeutic exercises, manual techniques, and assistive devices to help patients regain or improve their mobility, strength, and overall functional abilities while promoting a healthy lifestyle.

What types of conditions do physical therapists treat?

Physical therapists are skilled in treating a wide range of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and cardiopulmonary systems. They commonly treat patients with neck, back, and joint pain, as well as sports injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, and various movement disorders. Physical therapy can also benefit individuals with chronic conditions, neurological disorders, and age-related issues, as it aims to improve overall function, mobility, and quality of life.

What type of treatment techniques and modalities do physical therapists use?

Physical therapists employ a variety of evidence-based treatment techniques and modalities to address each patient's unique needs. These may include therapeutic exercises, manual therapy, joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, and neuromuscular re-education. Additionally, they may utilize modalities such as electrical stimulation, ultrasound, heat/cold therapy to help reduce pain, improve circulation, and facilitate recovery. Patient education, lifestyle modifications, and home exercise programs are also integral components of physical therapy treatment plans.

Does physical therapy hurt?

Physical therapy treatment aims to minimize pain and discomfort while promoting recovery and improved function. However, some patients may experience temporary discomfort or soreness during or after treatment sessions. This is typically due to the body's natural response to the therapeutic interventions and the healing process. Physical therapists work closely with patients to ensure that any discomfort is manageable and adjust treatment techniques as needed to optimize patient comfort and safety. Open communication between the patient and therapist is essential to ensure an effective and comfortable treatment experience.

Is physical therapy safe?

Physical therapy is generally safe when conducted by a licensed professional. Therapists undergo extensive training to assess, diagnose, and treat various conditions effectively. They tailor treatment plans to each patient's needs, closely monitoring progress and adjusting as necessary. While there may be some risks or side effects, open communication between the patient and therapist, alongside careful planning and execution, can minimize these concerns. Discussing medical history and any concerns with the therapist is essential for ensuring the safest and most effective treatment plan.

Will physical therapy cure me of pain?

Physical therapy helps reduce pain and improve function, but the extent of pain relief varies per individual and condition. Therapists create personalized treatment plans, and following their recommendations, including home exercises and lifestyle changes, can optimize your outcomes.

Can I see a physical therapist if I am pregnant?

Yes, you can see a physical therapist if you are pregnant. Physical therapists are trained to work with pregnant patients, addressing pregnancy-related discomforts, promoting safe exercise, and enhancing overall wellness. They can also help prepare your body for labor and support postpartum recovery. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise or therapy program during pregnancy to ensure it is safe for you and your baby.

Does insurance cover physical therapy care?

Absolutely! We take most insurance plans and would be happy to assist you in determining your coverage for physical therapy care. Please contact your insurance provider to verify your coverage and any out-of-pocket expenses. If you need help, please don't hesitate to reach out to our office for assistance.
